Journey of Lighting Design

Abstract

I’m a painter in the theater. I paint with the light on the canvas known as theater. When I picture on the stage, everything is alive. I have the diverse size of brushes and myriad color palette. I am fascinated by light in the sense that it could not only express atmosphere and environment but also how it could illustrate many other things, even in an empty space, through color, texture, and angle.

This description above of myself as a lighting designer is what I learned from the University of California San Diego for two and a half years. It was a journey to open my eyes the way of using lights. I experienced different types of theatre that trained me the way to deal with architecture and environment. I also explore various characters’ light equipment that I hadn’t used before I came here. I tried new things as much as I can, which the classes encouraged me to break the shell.

I designed lights eleven pieces in the University of California San Diego. I decided to show five plays and two dance pieces which have different ideas. All shows went through the debate with the creative team from at least three months to six months. Through this process, the team developed from the script which is just text for the play and the concept of movement for the dance show. Eventually, this base became a show in the theater with actors or dancers, set, sound, and lighting.
