Il Gioco dei regni è un eccellente esempio di cronaca famigliare trasposta nel romanzo contemporaneo. Scritto da Clara Sereni nel 1993 – e ripubblicato con nuove prefazioni nel 2007 e nel 2017 – il testo è una saga di famiglia organizzata in diversi capitoli dedicati al padre e alla madre dell’autrice, Emilio Sereni e Xenia Silberberg, e basati su un materiale documentario ampio e originale ricavato da memorie, lettere, diari e ricerche in archivio. Il romanzo sulla famiglia dell’autrice risulta essere un’opera ibrida e contaminata la cui molteplicità di contenuti come osserva Asor Rosa, «non inficia l'unità narrativa dell'insieme, che è straordinaria», ma serve piuttosto a «dare spazio onestamente anche alla pluralità delle voci e degli accenti». I diversi fulcri narrativi si snodano e vengono sviluppati attraverso dinamiche e dicotomie tra avvenimenti privati e pubblica vita politica, e sono tra i più significativi per il secolo breve ed emblematici per la famiglia Sereni: l’identità familiare ebraica - radicata ma anche negata - le contrastanti appartenenze politiche e ideologiche – in particolare l’opposizione tra comunismo e sionismo per i fratelli Emilio ed Enzo, il cambiamento generazionale che trasforma i rapporti tra genitori e figli. Il Gioco dei regni è il testo sul ritrovamento della memoria personale che diventa anche memoria collettiva. Per Clara Sereni narrare la memoria significa ricostruire i vari pezzi della sua «vita a mosaico» e «costruita a tessere mal tagliate» per riappacificarsi con un sé contrastante e meglio ridefinire un’identità di donna e scrittrice più consapevole e completa.

Written by Clara Sereni in 1993 - and republished with new prefaces in 2007 and 2017 - the text is a family saga organized into several chapters dedicated to the father and mother of the author, Emilio Sereni and Xenia Silberberg, and based on extensive and original documentary material derived from memories, letters, diaries and archival research. The novel about the author's family turns out to be a hybrid and contaminated work whose multiplicity of contents, as Asor Rosa observes, "does not affect the narrative unity of the whole, which is extraordinary", but rather serves to "give honest space also to the plurality of voices and accents". The different narrative units are developed through dynamics and dichotomies between private events and public political life, that are most significant for the short century and emblematic for the Sereni family: the Jewish family identity - rooted but also denied - the contrasting political and ideological affiliations - in particular the opposition between communism and Zionism for the brothers Emilio and Enzo, the generational change that transforms the relationship between parents and children. This essay on Il gioco dei regni aims at underlining the importance of finding one’s personal memory which also becomes collective memory. For Clara Sereni, narrating memory means reconstructing the various pieces of her "mosaic life" "built with badly cut tiles "in order to make peace with a contrasting self and better redefine a more conscious and complete identity of both woman and writer.
