Coffee is one of the most valued agricultural commodities in the world. Due to its rising popularity, demand for coffee seeds has rapidly increased, leading to the cultivation of the crop in various countries. Among the Coffea species, Coffea arabica L. is the most prized, grown and cultivated worldwide. Previously, scientists have relied on historical evidence to trace the Ethiopian origin of C. arabica; today, genetic tools can be employed to determine a more precise region of origin. Genetic markers such as microsatellites or simple sequence repeats (SSR) are particularly useful in determining the genetic distance between individuals or populations, an important piece of information that can eventually be used to trace back the evolution of an individual or species. To assess polymorphism between modern day cultivars and wild C. arabica accessions, amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) analysis and SSRs have been used. In addition...

Genetic Insights into the Biogeography and Evolutionary History of the Killer Whale

This paper reviews genetic studies undertaken to generate an accurate phylogeny of killer whale (Orcinus orca) lineages. Three phylogenies, distinct in branching order and timing of divergences, are discussed. Of the three phylogenies, two are based on mitochondrial DNA and show more ancient divergence times for killer whale lineages. The third phylogeny, based on nuclear DNA, indicates that killer whales diversified more recently. The differing phylogenies have differing implications for biogeographic inference and for species assessments. The nuclear based phylogeny suggests that killer whale lineages diverged in sympatry while the mitochondrial based phylogenies as well as an empirical study indicate that the divergences more likely occurred in allopatry. The mitochondrial based phylogenies also support revision of killer whale taxonomy as there is indication that killer whales constitute multiple species and subspecies instead of a single species. The types of research that...

Recent Advances in Nanoparticle-Based Cancer Drug Delivery

Cancer is among the leading causes of death worldwide, with the number of new cancer cases expected to rise to 22 million in the next two decades. Most chemotherapy drugs in the market are difficult to administer directly and many are toxic to healthy tissues and produce undesirable side effects. To overcome these limitations, recent advances in nanoparticle-based cancer drug delivery present a promising strategy to achieve high therapeutic efficiency of anticancer agents by providing protection during circulation and enhancing their bioavailability. This review describes strategies using nanoparticles to deliver anticancer agents and designs for stimuli-responsive drug release. The scope of this study is limited to only magnetic field, ultrasound, and pH stimuli-response methods. Potential adverse effects of nanoparticle accumulation in the body were also evaluated. Peer-reviewed studies that included “nanoparticle drug delivery” in the title and were published after 2014 were...

Other options do exist: A review of access to long acting reversible contraceptives

One of the most effective methods for preventing pregnancy is use of long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs), however this form of contraception is not the most commonly used among women. The low prevalence of LARCs can be explained by limited access due to women’s and physicians’ misconceptions about the efficacy of and eligibility for the method. These misconceptions regarding LARCs likely originate from physicians not having adequate and updated training. Physicians can spread inaccurate information to patients during the patient-physician interaction which can persuade women against LARCs. Additionally, physicians might even refrain from offering LARCs. This results in women making an uninformed decision regarding their health. A shared-decision making (SDM) model, which incorporates patient preferences with medical knowledge, is currently being tested to reduce physician bias during the decision-making process of contraceptive counseling. However, because misconceptions...
