Descriptional survey results of student use of AI for research in the classroom

Student learning and the use of AI is a new challenge to educators. This presentation by health science librarian, Erik Fausak and writing lecturer, Brendan Johnston, explores AI’s potential in finding research, testing clinical questions, and extracting relevant data. There is already research on the benefits of using AI to augment or supplement the health science writing of experts. But how useful is it to introduce the nascent technology to novice researchers and writers in the classroom? We aim to test students' critical appraisal of the uses and potential pitfalls of AI in the research and writing process. While the preliminary reaseach and approach were presented at SITT 2024, these are the results of a student survey administered in the class.

Presentation was for UC Davis Scholarship in Teaching and Learning Conference, 5 December 2025 at ARC Ballroom. Davis, CA 95616

"Flipped classroom" model's impact on Knowledge retention. from the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) 2021. Reconnecting the SoTL community.

Purpose

There is evidence that “flipped classroom” models result in improved learning outcomes. “Flipped classrooms” are where lecture content is provided prior to class sessions, often in the form of short instructional videos so active learning exercises can be practiced in class. The aim of this assessment is to identify if “flipped classroom” instruction results in improved retention for future recall.

Main Findings

A voluntary quiz used to measure student retention of knowledge a year after initial flipped classroom instruction shows promising improvement from lecture-based instruction. Overall, greater improvements of scores can be consistently seen in the flipped classroom group compared (average scores 80% and 78% in 2020 and 2021, respectively) to the lecture-based group (average score 72%). Average scores were highest with the largest sample group the first...

Designing Resilient Library Services: A Workshop on Resilience Engineering for Librarians

Topic: Resilience engineering (RE) offers a powerful framework for designing processes that enable organizations to respond effectively to and learn from large-scale disruptions such as system outages, funding loss, natural disasters, and unexpected leadership transitions. While resilience is often viewed as a personal trait, resilience takes on new significance in RE’s systems approach, emphasizing the critical need for organizational-level resilience. This perspective is particularly relevant to libraries, whose operations and services are pivotal to institutional adaptability and sustainability.

This 90-minute interactive workshop will introduce participants to the principles of RE, exploring how its application can empower librarians to strengthen organizational resilience. Through real-world examples and participatory activities, attendees will gain practical strategies for integrating RE concepts into their daily work, highlighting how information work...

It’s All About the Prompt: Using AI Tools for Information Research

Large Language Models (LLMs) such as Open AI Chat GPT, Microsoft Bing, and Google Bard have received widespread coverage in the popular and higher education press. However, an important aspect of using these tools effectively has attracted minimal attention – how an individual phrases their query, or prompts the tool, impacts the content and quality of the response.

Librarians have extensive experience helping students translate their research topics and questions into searchable queries across various online platforms. This poster includes an overview and assessment of existing AI tools and highlights what we have learned about crafting effective LLM prompts.

The emergence of new AI tools for information retrieval and synthesis is exciting; however, there are serious caveats. Instructors should encourage students to recognize the biases associated with using AI tools.

Evidence, Information, and Knowledge: Key Contributors to Organizational Resilience

The cross-disciplinary field of resilience engineering has been at the forefront of designing robust, flexible processes to embed this construct into daily practice in a variety of environments. This co-presented session will explore the role of the information, evidence, and knowledge (EIK) necessary to support organizational resilience and to design preemptive responses to expected types of failure and generate learning. Organizations must be able to incorporate the three elements (EIK) as different components of a fully informed organization. By recognizing the skills needed to optimize the use of EIK and strategize programs and initiatives to support a culture that values EIK use as a core element in the quest for organizational resilience, organizations can bolster their reliability. The speakers will discuss how EIK can help their teams respond to and recover from unanticipated events, to quickly bounce back to normal operations, and to design systems to learn from and prevent...

This session will be an active discussion session where all participants will be able to share and learn from one another. The faciliatator will guide participants through various interactive exercises to explore topics such as:

What was difficult during and after COVID-19 and did you find any unexpected solutions?

What actually turned out as a positive outcome that you might not have explored if it wasn’t for the pandemic?

If you faced another crisis in the next 5 years, what did you learn from COVID-19 that you would like to make sure you remember next time around?

Were there new things you tried during the pandemic that worked so well that you will keep doing them in the future? What needs to be done to make it happen?

Themes discussed will be captured so that participants will have a synthesis of themes arising from the discussion.

The Question of the Question: Research Data Inquiries in Relation to Library Services

New attention to the power of data in research has brought new kinds of data questions to the university research library. This study seeks to understand the character of research data questions in order to help research libraries develop the structures, technologies, collections, and professional skills needed to meet the needs of the research communities. It employs two original metrics to analyze 42 cases: The Data Question Typology, which allows for the organization of data questions into categories based on researcher objectives, and the Modified READ Scale for Data Questions (MRSD), which is used to record the magnitude of difficulty presented by each case. It finds that data questions differ significantly across academic fields and that successful research assistance often requires partnerships between subject specialists librarians and technological or computational experts. It concludes with a recommendation on how research libraries can facilitate a collaborative process...

Paving the road to success: leadership skills in an interprofessional landscape

 Introduction

Academic medical libraries often sit at the crossroads of the complex landscape of the health sciences. Medical librarians in these environments must navigate and lead endeavors and services that may cross many professions. In one day, for example, a medical librarian could meet with a department head of medicine, a director of nursing education, a chief information officer, and a patient safety director, each of whom are held to the leadership standards of their fields. In addition to being excellent leaders in their own professions, how can medical librarians lead in an interprofessional context? In this study, the authors set out to understand leadership principles from three professions closely affiliated with medical librarianship in order to identify a core interdisciplinary leadership skill set.

Background: The judicious use of antimicrobials in the livestock industry has become a topic of increasing interest over the last few years. Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is considered mainly a problem of feedlot cattle or dairy calves, but a survey on the use of antimicrobials in California cow-calf operations revealed that BRD is in the top three diseases that ranchers treat most frequently with antimicrobials. There are both viral and bacterial causative agents that are associated with BRD. The pathogenesis of these agents often depends on the immune status of the animals and stress is considered to play major role in exacerbating the problem. In cow-calf operations these stressors can be in the form of management procedures such as processing of calves where they may be castrated, vaccinated, receive ear tags or being branded. Weaning is another stressful event in the life of a calf where the effects can be synergized if the calf is also transported at the same...

Protocol for a Scoping/Systematic Review: Non-antimicrobial approaches for the prevention or treatment of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis applicable to cow-calf operations.

Antimicrobial stewardship promotes best practices for the prevention, treatment and control of diseases that require antimicrobial treatment such that development of antimicrobial resistance is prevented and/or reduced. Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK, pinkeye) is one of the most important diseases requiring use of antimicrobials in cow-calf operations in California according to a recent survey of ranchers in this state conducted by the California Department of Food and Agriculture. The efficacy of antimicrobial treatments for the disease have been well documented and summarized. However, less information is available on non-antimicrobial measures to prevent, control or treat the disease. In order to inform best practices for the judicious use of antimicrobials on cow-calf operations, this review explores the literature for evidence of effective methods to prevent pinkeye as well as of effective non-antimicrobial treatments.

Protocol for a Scoping/Systematic Review: Scoping Review of Vaccination for the Prevention of Calf Scours in Cow-Calf Operations

Background: The use of antimicrobials in the livestock industry has been a topic of increasing concern in the last few years. Calf scours is one of the main causes of mortality among calves younger than 1 month and affects the development of the animal, representing severe economic losses to the producers. The causes of the disease include a variety of viral, bacterial and protozoal pathogens, and other non-infectious causes. The treatment efficacy, in particular of antimicrobial therapy, depends on the type of infection. Blanket antimicrobial treatment for calf scours without identification of the pathogen may contribute to antimicrobial resistance. In this review we explore the available literature for evidence of effective methods to prevent calf scours in cow-calf operations in California through the use of vaccination.

Objectives: The objective of this scoping review is to examine and describe the existing literature on vaccination for the prevention...

Effectiveness of Antimicrobials in the Treatment of Neonatal Diarrhea in Calves: A protocol for a Systematic Review and Meta-analysis. Authors: Bernal Cordoba, Erik Davis Fausak, N. Silva del Rio

Background:Neonatal diarrhea affects nearly 25% of pre-weaned calves. Prevention through management practices is the preferable approach to control diarrhea. Once calves experience diarrhea, fluids, electrolytes and acid-base balance need to be restored. Severe cases of diarrhea should be treated with antimicrobials but the need of antimicrobials in mild and moderate clinical cases it is still under debate.

Objectives:The objective of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of antimicrobial treatments or the comparative efficacy of antimicrobials treatments in calves with mild, moderate and severe diarrhea.

Design: The search strategy will be based on population (calves with diarrhea), and intervention (antimicrobial therapy). The following data bases will be used: Medline, CAB abstracts, Scopus, and Biosis. The outcomes of interest will be the occurrence and persistence of clinical signs of diarrhea, rate of growth, weight gain, feed efficiency...

LEF: An Index

LEF, or Zhurnal levogo fronta iskusstv, was the main organ (1924-1928) of the Left Front for the Arts (1922-1929), an outgrowth of the avant-garde strain of early Soviet culture spearheaded by Russian Futurism. Its aim included advancing Russian Futurism, as well as developing what was known as "literatura fakta." LEF’s first editor-in-chief was Vladimir Majakovskij, and other regular contributors included writers and critics such as Viktor Shklovskij, Osip Brik, Boris Kushner, Boris Arvatov, Nikolaj Chizhak, Sergej Tret'jakov, Semen Kirsanov, and Nikolaj Aseev. LEF published the work of a number of Soviet (and foreign) writers, including Boris Pasternak, Andrej Kruchenyx, Isaak Babel', etc., as well as artists, designers, and filmmakers such as Aleksandr Rodchenko (LEF's artistic director), Varvara Stepanova, Anton Lavinskij, Lev Kuleshov, Dziga Vertov, Esfir' Shub, Sergej Ejzenshtejn, etc. The first complete electronically accessible table of contents for every issue of LEF...

E-Science Day

Held on December 6, 2011, E-Science Day was a day-long event, funded by the National Network of Libraries of Medicine Pacific Southwest Region (NN/LM PSR). Available in a blended format (i.e. via in-person attendance and via webinar), the proceedings of the event were recorded for archival purposes.

The objectives guiding the planning of the event were: to educate regional librarians in e-science, and to expose regional librarians to information and resources designed to encourage the initiation of e-science support projects within their own libraries and institutions. The event programming featured keynote and panel presentations from experts in topics pertinent to e-science, as well as a lightning round session with presentations detailing real-life applications of e-science-related projects and initiatives. Following this educational portion, event attendees were then divided into break-out groups for the interactive/think-tank portion of the day. Each group had a...
