Efficient Urban Water Management: Smart Soil Moisture Sensor-Based Irrigation Controllers

Urban water conservation is very important in California given the limited amount of available freshwater. Landscape irrigation is the largest user of urban water in Southern California. Therefore, it is important to schedule irrigation properly to avoid water loss while keeping plants healthy. Smart irrigation controllers can help save water by adjusting irrigation based on weather conditions and soil moisture levels. This publication focuses on soil moisture sensor-based irrigation controllers that can be used for landscape irrigation management in different urban settings, including residential areas. These controllers monitor soil moisture levels and use this information to avoid unnecessary irrigation, helping reduce water waste. This publication provides essential information to help readers understand the science behind these controllers and how to use and maintain them in practice. Available rebate programs for purchasing smart irrigation controllers and soil moisture...

Beef Cattle on California Annual Grasslands: Production Cycle and Economics

Much of California is annual rangeland, grazed seasonally when forage quality is best. For optimum results, the seasonality of these rangelands must be coordinated with the phases of beef cattle production. This publication walks cattle producers through annual stock flows and calendar of operations and gives tables for estimating costs, return over cash, and gross income under various scenarios. Also included is a discussion of various risk factors.

Plant health can be affected by the acidity of soil. The conditions best for plant growth depend on the particular plant, but most plants prefer soil that is neither very acidic nor very alkaline.

Soil acidity can be adjusted to optimize plant growth, but adjusting acidity is not always the best course of action. Instead, it may be best to grow plants adapted to the native soil. For gardeners who decide to adjust the acidity of soil, it is important to understand when and how to do so.

This information will help you formulate and implement strategies for achieving your personal goals as a landowner.

Range livestock production developed as an enterprise with the colonization of California by the Spanish and their formation of ranches or ranchos, and it expanded rapidly during early statehood. The development of improved animal management and range management practices ensured that the industry would continue its dominance in California agriculture throughout the twentieth century and into the twenty-first century.

This information will help you formulate and implement strategies for achieving your personal goals as a landowner.

California has some of the most productive croplands in the world. Recently, increasing conflicts among urban development, intensive agriculture, and protectionism have led to increasingly rigid distinctions among resource management objectives. Having a long-term perspective on the causes and interpretation of changes in the landscape can aid in resolving conflicting goals and objectives among stakeholders.

Ecology and Management of Annual Rangelands Series: Vegetation Change and Ecosystem Services

Vegetation types in the annual rangelands include annual-dominated non-native grasslands, native-dominated grasslands, oak woodlands, chaparral, and coastal scrub. The ecosystem services, or benefits, that humans obtain from each vegetation type change as the vegetation type changes and need to be assessed accordingly. This publication describes the dominant and common species in each vegetation type, the vegetation changes and change agents that are commonly recognized, and an approach to evaluating ecosystem services.

Building to Coexist with Fire: Community Risk Reduction Measures for New Development in California

Where communities are built on the landscape, and how they are designed, are very important issues in determining how vulnerable they will be to wildfire-related losses.

This publication offers guidance on how planners, fire districts, and communities can develop community-scale risk reduction measures (RRM) when building or rebuilding in fire-prone areas.

Considerations include inclusion of fire professionals in the planning process; the spatial placement of communities; how communities are laid out to minimize exposure; and key defensibility, ignition, and evacuation concerns. Examples are provided for each RRM, along with some consideration of challenges associated with their implementation.

The guidance provided here will be helpful for agency personnel involved in evaluating and approving future development in California. Because there is a pressing need for additional housing in California, communities must be built with design principles that make them...

This publication provides an overview of the research and practices for brush and weed control, seeding, and fertilization. Also covered are practices that reduce seasonal gaps in forage availability and quality and the economics of vegetation management.

While increasing carrying capacity by producing more forage remains an important objective, ranchers and public agencies also manage for fire hazard reduction, improved water quality, air quality, and biodiversity. In addition, suppressing introduced species and restoring native species has become a major theme among conservation organizations and some government agencies.

Ecology and Management of Annual Rangelands Series: Grazing Management

The response of vegetation, livestock, and ecosystems to grazing is complex, and grazing managers are confronted with a variety of grazing strategies or systems that are sometimes hard to compare or evaluate.

This publication covers what are commonly known as the four components of grazing—intensity, season, frequency, and duration—and their effects on annual rangelands. We will discuss why grazing management research results sometimes conflict with experience. And you will get an overview of the adaptive management process of planning, implementation, and learning that grazing managers can use to help them cope with complexity and knowledge.

Livestock production on California’s annual rangelands has adapted to the seasonality of rangeland forage dominated by annual grasses and forbs growing in a Mediterranean-type climate. Rangeland managers have learned to balance seasonal forage availability and quality with the changing physiological needs of their animals by feeding them hay and other supplements and by transporting them to other forage sources, including other vegetation types in cooler climates.

This publication gives an overview of seasonal forage sources, nutrient requirements of grazing animals, seasonal forage quality, seasonal animal performance, supplemental feeding, water needs, livestock production systems, and animal health issues.

Preparing for Disaster: Establishing an Ag Pass Program in Your Community

Possession of an Ag Pass during a wildfire or similar disaster allows farmers and ranchers access to areas that may otherwise be restricted to the public so that they can protect or care for agricultural assets (such as by irrigating crops or feeding, watering, and transporting livestock) or provide auxiliary support to emergency personnel (such as identification of access roads and water points).

It is crucial that those who may seek access to an evacuation zone establish communication—before a crisis—with all relevant local agencies so that authorities understand and support the process.

This publication describes how communities across California might approach such a program, recognizing that the structure and organization of any such program will ultimately depend upon the specific resources, politics, and relationships within any one community.

Mass Tree Mortality, Fuels, and Fire: A Guide for Sierra Nevada Forest Landowners

Tree mortality is changing California’s landscape and affecting the amount and type of fuel available for wildland fires. Since the extraordinary drought of 2012 through 2015, millions of trees have died in California, particularly in the Sierra Nevada. Fire risk depends on multiple factors, including weather and ignition sources, which are not affected by tree mortality. However, in areas that have experienced mass tree mortality, the amount and distribution of dead wood that can act as fuel has changed, altering the risk posed by fires.

This publication discusses examples of mass tree mortality and assesses the impact on fuels—so that landowners and managers can understand fire risk on their own property and develop strategies to reduce it.

Determining Volume in a Small Pond with a Staff Gauge and Depth-Capacity Curve

Since stock ponds are not flat bottomed, the simplest way to monitor water volume is with a depth-capacity curve showing the total volume stored at various water levels throughout the season. You can use this publication to develop a pond curve, if one is not available for your stock water pond. You'll be walked through the steps needed to develop a pond curve - including data collection, instructions on using an ANR online app to develop your curve, how to determine volume.

Natural History of the Central Coast Bioregion

Whether one drives the Big Sur coastline, or stands at the foot of a giant coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) or in the shade of an ancient valley oak (Quercus lobata), it is clear that California’s Central Coast Bioregion embodies exceptional biological diversity and natural beauty. Extending from the southwest corner of San Joaquin County south to northern Ventura County, the bioregion is bounded on the west by the Pacific Ocean and on the east by the San Joaquin Valley, Carrizo Plains, and the interior Transverse Ranges. Across the bioregion’s 15,000 square miles (9% of California’s area), physical and biological processes, combined with time and human actions, have resulted in a broad range of ecosystems, each harboring distinct assemblages of plants and animals.

Identifying Polyphagous and Kuroshio Shot-Hole Borer in California

The Invasive Shot-Hole Borer is a new, rapidly spreading, invasive pest threatening landscape trees and commercial avocado groves. The beetle is a vector for the plant disease fusarium dieback. First detected in the Los Angeles basin in 2012, it has quickly spread as far north as San Luis Obispo. Currently there are no control measures for the disease. While the current economic impact to crops is focused on avocados, computer models suggest almond to be a potential host.
This publication explains the life cycle, biology and identification, look-alike pests, signs and symptoms of infestation and damage, reproductive hosts, and landscape and agricultural host species.

Drought Planning for Vegetable Production

When water is in short supply, growers must estimate how much water their crops require, as well as how much water is available, to determine how much land can be planted and irrigated. Growers can arrive at these estimates by performing calculations that take into account crop water requirements such as evapotranspiration and salt management; available irrigation water; and available non-irrigation water sources such as rainfall, fog, and shallow groundwater. Performing these calculations will allow growers to make informed decisions about how many acres to plant.

These eight handouts are designed to help parents learn positive parenting skills that promote healthy eating habits in children between 2 and 12 years of age. Each handout focuses on a specific topic identified as relevant through surveys of educators in federally funded nutrition education programs.
The content of the handouts is based on empirical research that shows the following:
• Parents control and shape the environment in which their children develop.
• Parent-child interactions, including those around food, are most effective when done with warmth and sensitivity.
• Parents who have more positive parenting skills are more likely to have positive interactions with their children around food.
• Parents need to begin shaping healthy eating habits early. Children’s eating habits begin forming as early as 3 years of age.
• Promoting positive parenting is beneficial to all parent-child interactions, including feeding.
• Positive parenting is associated with better dietary...
